Corporal Anthony Andrews suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in a departmental physical fitness program.

He and another officer were jogging in a local park when he suddenly collapsed. The other officer immediately began CPR until paramedics arrived.

Corporal Andrews was transported to a local hospital where he remained unconscious until passing away one week later.

Corporal Andrews was an Army National Guard veteran of the War on Terrorism. He had served with the Saraland Police Department for 7 years and had previously served with the Satsuma Police Department. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Sergeant Micah Burks succumbed to injuries inflicted in an automobile accident four days earlier.

Sergeant Burks was driving on US 31 when the driver of a vehicle made a left hand turn in front of his patrol car, causing a collision. Sergeant Burks and two passengers from the other car were ejected from the vehicles.

The other two victims were killed instantly. Sergeant Burks suffered severe head and body trauma. He was transported to Baptist Medical Center South where he died four days later.

Sergeant Burks had served with the Autauga County Sheriff's Office for 15 years. He is survived by his son and daughter

 



Officer Keith E. Houts

Officer Keith Houts succumbed to a gunshot wound inflicted two days earlier while making a traffic stop on North Decatur Street, just a few blocks from police headquarters, at 12:45 pm.

After shooting Officer Houts in the head, the killer shot him several times in the chest as he laid on the ground, but the shots were all stopped by his vest.

Officer Houts was transported to Jackson Hospital where he remained in critical condition until succumbing to his wounds.

The killer fled the area and was captured in McDonough, Georgia, by members of the United States Marshals Service. He was immediately extradited back to Montgomery and charged with capital murder.

Officer Houts was a veteran of the War on Terrorism. He had served with the Montgomery Police Department for 2 years and is survived by his wife.

Officer Mary Smith was shot and killed while checking on a suspicious vehicle on Avenue H. Officer Smith had detained one subject and had placed him against the hood of her patrol car when another subject approached and opened fire on her.

One round struck her in the chest, just above her vest, fatally wounding her. A second officer who arrived on the scene moments later was shot in the leg.

Two subjects were taken into custody immediately after the shooting. The shooting suspect was apprehended the following day and charged with capital murder and attempted murder.

Officer Smith had served with the Fairfield Police Department for two months, and had previously served with the Birmingham Police Department for 21 years.

Lieutenant Dexter Holcomb was struck and killed by a school bus while directing traffic during a school dismissal.
Lieutenant Holcomb was directing traffic near Oxford High School. He was standing at the foot of a hill near the intersection of College and Snow Streets when a school bus driver lost control of the bus and struck him. Officer Holcomb was pinned underneath for about 15 minutes while rescue workers used air bags to lift the bus.
Lieutenant Holcomb was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he died from his injuries.
Lieutenant Holcomb had served on the Oxford Police force for more than twenty years and he also served as a volunteer firefighter in Piedmont, Alabama.
